Frequently asked questions

We are always available to talk to if you have any queries,

however maybe we can answer some of your questions below.

Installation FAQs

Yes, we have several different systems to suit most applications including: In-Slab for new builds and extensions - essential for polished / burnished concrete floors or for carpet and solid timber. In-slab heating is ideal for use with "time of use" tariffs such as Midday Saver with Synergy. In-Screed systems - recommended for most bathrooms where a screen is being installed. Also suitable for living areas that are being screeded prior to laying stone and porcelain tiles. Under-Tile System - This is our thinnest cable or mat system, ideal where no screed is being done. Can be covered with a thin levelling compound and in some cases tiled over directly, but this often depends on the area, the type of tiles and your tiler.

We offer a 10 year warranty on the heating cables and 2 year warranty on the thermostats.

NO - Floor heating is designed to run at relatively low temperatures of 22-28 degress Celcius and this temperature will not cause any issues for tiles or stone flooring. If you have a timber floor you should seek guidance from the floor supplier to ensure that their maximum recommended temperature (often 25-26 degrees) is not exceeded.

Yes, floor heating will add heat to the room and the radiant heat from the floor gently heats the space around it. In many cases, especially if most of the floor is heated, this will be the only source of heating required, however please check with us or your installer regarding your installation. If you choose to only heat small sections of a room, then this is unlikely to provide 'full heating'.

This depends on your lifestyle and desired temperatures. Generally heating between 3 to 4 hours a day is sufficient to give you adequate comfort levels. Our thermostats have timers built in so you can set the times to suit your requirements. Times of operation will also be influenced by the type of system and if you have an '"time of use" tariffs such as Midday Saver with Synergy. - please refer to the operating instructions for our recommendations and further information.

For Living areas we usually install at 100-150 watts/sqm. For bathrooms we can go up to 200w/sqm (free floor area)

Thermostat FAQs

Yes - all the thermostats we supply have very accurate temperature control. Most models allow you to select between floor temperature OR air temperature.

This depends on your lifestyle and desired temperatures. Generally heating between 3 to 4 hours a day is sufficient to give you adequate comfort levels. Our thermostats have timers built in so you can set the times to suit your requirements. Times of operation will also be influenced by the type of system and if you have an 'off-peak' meter - please refer to the operating instructions for our recommendations and further information.

Radiant Thermostats are available in both a Vertical and Horizontal orientation. Our standard thermostat is a while vertical model, however various alternative upgrades are available. The glass thermostat range are also available in a Black ad Silver option.

Absolutely, Radiant have just the thing. A Dual Timer & Thermostat option is perfect when you are installing under floor heating and a heated towel rail. The Dual controller has two zones, one for the under floor heating and another for the heated towel rail allowing you to set independent schedules for each. This single combined unit removes the need to have two different units mounted on the wall in your bathroom, instead this combined digital touchscreen controller does both.

Reason: Floor sensor not connected or faulty/damaged

Solutions: replace sensor if in conduit, switch to back up sensor if 2 installed (most Radiant installs not kits) OR simply follow menu instructions to switch to AIR sensing. (Power off - Press Menu - change Menu 01 to A (Air) - Press done - Power back on - NOTE DO NOT select AF or it will not work. Floor heating will work just as well on AIR sensing as Floor sensing in almost all cases.

Reasons: Incorrectly programmed or faulty thermostat

Solutions: Take a note of the temperature reading & confirm the flame symbol is displayed on the screen. Change Mode to Manual as described above & then down arrow to drop the set temperature below the current displayed temperature. Wait a few seconds & you should hear a click & see the flame symbol go off. Re check in 1 hour & confirm displayed temperature is dropping. If so then it is most likely a programming issue or the "off" temperature is set too high - re-program & set the "off" temp to a lower temperature e.g. 10 deg C. In the unlikely event that the temperature does not drop & the floor continues to heat, switch off the circuit at the switchboard (if on a separate circuit) & contact Radiant for a replacement thermostat unit.

Floor heating is designed so that the floor should get comfortably warm, but it will not feel "hot" to the touch - typical recommended floor temperatures would be 22-26 deg C for living areas & 24-28 deg in bathrooms. If the floor is not getting warm, possible causes are:
Incorrectly programmed
Incorrectly wired
Faulty thermostat
Floor sensor not installed (or damaged/faulty)
Damage or fault with floor heating cable
Solutions: Check the screen, is it on A (air sensing) or AF (Air with floor limit) or F (Floor sensing) what temperature does it read? It is easier to test when on Floor sensing (F) if sensors is installed so first change to F using menu as described in previous solution above. Press Mode so that a picture of a hand is displayed (press & hold schedule if you have the premium square faced version) then press the up arrow to increase set temp a few degrees (e.g. 28 degC) then wait a few seconds. You should hear a click & see a little flame symbol appear. If the screen goes blank or it trips the breaker as soon as the heating clicks in, please contact the installer/electrician to test the cable (test resistance & continuity & report back for further guidance) If the screen remains on with flame symbol displayed, wait 1 hour & re-check temperature. If it is increasing then the floor heating is working but you may need to increase the scheduled timed to achieve the desired temperature see separate sheet on operating recommendations. If no increase in temperature after 1 hour, get installer/electrician to check wiring & test heating cable (resistance & continuity) & report back for further guidance.
